Setting: Paul writes to the Roman church from Corinth (15.25-27, I Cor. 16.3-5; 1.1 identifies Paul as writer; similar to letter to the Galatians). Paul has completed work between Palestine and Rome and wants to go to Spain.
Audience: church in Rome, educated, predominantly Gentile in character.
